Lead Source Tracking for Contractors
Every marketing decision you make comes down to which channel produced the job. If the source field is empty, guessed at, or free text, you are not deciding. You are guessing with a spreadsheet open.
You cannot cut a channel you cannot trace.

The dataWhat We Instrument
· Service RegisterSource tracking is plumbing, not reporting. The reports come later and they only work if the plumbing is right. This is the plumbing.
Every Budget Argument Traces Back to This Field
· Why It MattersYou cannot calculate cost of marketing by channel without knowing which channel produced the revenue. You cannot cut the weakest channel, defend the strongest one to a partner, or tell an agency their number is wrong. All of it depends on one field being filled in correctly, every time, by people who are busy doing something else.
On most contractor sites that field is a free-text box reading “how did you hear about us,” and the answers come back as Google, google, internet, online, saw your truck, and my neighbor. Six answers, four channels, zero usable reporting. The fix is boring and it is structural.
Self-reported source is imperfect and last-touch systematically undercredits anything that builds awareness. A homeowner who saw your truck for two years and then searched your name will be recorded as organic search. We instrument for the best available answer and we tell you where the model is lying to you, rather than pretending the dashboard is reality.

Define It, Wire It, Keep It Honest
· How We Do ItWe pull a sample of your recent leads and count how many carry a usable source. That number is usually the moment the conversation gets serious.
We build the controlled source list against the channels you actually run, not a generic template. Short enough that intake staff will use it, specific enough to make decisions from.
Forms, phone, chat, and offline paths all get instrumented to write into the same field, with the UTM convention documented so future campaigns stay comparable.
We recheck source completeness after the change and hand you the standard in writing, because this decays without an owner.
Six answers, four channels, zero usable reporting.
Lead Source Tracking, Answered Straight
· QuestionsIsn’t this the same thing as call tracking?
No. Call tracking attributes the phone, which for most contractors is the largest single channel but never the only one. This covers forms, chat, referral, and offline as well, and makes all of them land in one comparable field. Call tracking feeds this, it does not replace it.
What if the customer says Google but they really saw our truck?
That happens constantly and no system fixes it completely. It is the reason we do not compare a brand channel against a search channel on last-touch alone, and the reason we tell you where the model is weak instead of handing you a dashboard and calling it truth.
Do I need a CRM for this to work?
You need one place where every lead lands and one field that is required. A spreadsheet can hold that at low volume and will break as you grow. We work with what you have and tell you plainly when it has stopped being enough.
What is wrong with a “how did you hear about us” text box?
Free text cannot be counted. Ten people describing the same channel five different ways produces a report you cannot act on. The fix is a short controlled list, plus technical capture behind it so you are not relying only on memory.
How does this connect to my KPIs?
It is upstream of them. Marketing KPIs are only as good as the source data underneath, and cost of marketing by channel is impossible to calculate without it.
How long does this take to set up?
The audit is quick. The build depends on how many capture points you have and what your CRM allows. The part that takes longest is not technical, it is getting the people doing intake to use the same list every time.
