Why Your Competitor Shows Up First on Google (And How to Take Their Spot)

If you’re like most service-area business owners, you’ve typed your own company name into Google… and winced.

“Why does that guy show up first? We’ve been in business longer. We have more trucks. We do better work!”

It’s frustrating — especially if you’re in plumbing, HVAC, landscaping, or electrical — and local search is the #1 way homeowners and property managers find contractors today.

But here’s the good news: Google doesn’t play favorites. It rewards who shows up best, not who’s been around the longest. And the reasons your competitor ranks ahead of you are fixable — if you know where to look.

In this post, I’ll break down how the Map Pack and local search rankings actually work, why your competitor is beating you, and what to do about it — step-by-step.

The “Map Pack” Is Where the Action Happens

When someone searches “plumber near me” or “AC repair Toledo,” they usually see:

  1. A few paid ads
  2. A 3-pack of local listings — aka the “Map Pack”
  3. Organic search results

The Map Pack gets 40–60% of all clicks. If you’re not in it, you’re missing out on the highest-intent local traffic out there.

And if your competitor is in the Map Pack — and you’re not — guess who’s getting those calls?

What Google Uses to Rank Local Businesses

Here are the five key factors Google looks at to decide who ranks higher in local results:

1. Relevance

Is your business listing well-matched to the search? That means:

  • Accurate categories (plumber, HVAC contractor, drain cleaning, etc.)
  • Clear descriptions of services
  • Keyword relevance in content and posts

2. Proximity

How close is your business to the searcher’s location? You can’t control this — but you can optimize your service area and zip code mentions to help.

3. Prominence (aka Trust + Reputation)

How well-known and trusted is your business?

  • Review volume and rating
  • Local backlinks and citations
  • Mentions in the news or directories

4. Activity

How often do you update your Google Business Profile (GBP)? Are you posting updates, uploading photos, responding to reviews?

5. Website SEO

Google ties your GBP to your website. So if your site is weak, slow, or irrelevant — your local rankings suffer.

Common Reasons Your Competitor Ranks Higher

If you’re not showing up where you want to, it’s probably because of one or more of these:

  1. They have more (and better) Google reviews

  2. They’re posting to their Google Business Profile weekly

  3. Their business categories are better optimized

  4. Their website has dedicated pages for each service

  5. They’ve built backlinks from local blogs, directories, or chambers

  6. They have a faster-loading website with stronger SEO

They may not be a better business — but they’re playing the Google game more effectively.

Your 6-Step Plan to Take the Top Spot

Ready to take back control? Here’s your local search domination plan:

Step 1: Audit Your Google Business Profile

  • Is your NAP info correct?
  • Do you have at least 100 words in your business description with keywords?
  • Are you using all relevant categories (not just “Plumber” but also “Drainage Service,” “Water Heater Installer,” etc.)?

Step 2: Ramp Up Review Collection

  • Ask every happy customer for a review — ideally with keywords: “Great HVAC service in Toledo.”
  • Use text/email follow-up tools
  • Respond to every review — even the bad ones

Step 3: Post Weekly to Your GBP

  • Add before/after photos from jobs
  • Post seasonal content (“Spring lawn prep tips”)
  • Treat it like your social media page — but with higher ROI

Step 4: Fix Your Website

  • Create separate pages for each service (not just one Services page)
  • Optimize each page with local keywords and location references
  • Ensure your site is mobile-optimized and loads in under 3 seconds

Step 5: Build Local Backlinks

  • Submit your business to reputable directories
  • Partner with local blogs, charities, or chambers of commerce
  • Sponsor a local event and get a link from their site

Step 6: Track Everything

  • Use Google Search Console + GBP Insights
  • Monitor calls and form fills
  • Track rankings weekly (tools like BrightLocal or Whitespark)

Bonus: Want to Knock Out a Competitor Listing?

Sometimes, spammy or fake listings are clogging up the Map Pack. If a competitor:

  • Uses a fake business name (stuffed with keywords)
  • Has an address that doesn’t match their real location
  • Is violating Google’s guidelines

You can flag the listing and request a manual review from Google. Use the “Suggest an Edit” feature or report directly through Google Business support.

Final Thought: Visibility = Growth

If your competitor is outranking you, it’s not personal — it’s structural. They’ve taken the time (or hired someone) to build their digital footprint.

You can do the same — and often take back top spots within 60–90 days with focused action.

Google favors businesses that:

  • Are active
  • Are relevant
  • Are trusted
  • Are optimized

So if you’ve been frustrated watching someone else take your calls — it’s time to change that.
