GBP Category Optimization

Your Google Business Profile categories decide which searches you show up for.

The numbers

Most contractors pick one category and stop, leaving every other service they run invisible in the Map Pack. We build the category structure that claims those searches.

1Primary category per profile. Industry ranking-factor surveys place it as the strongest single signal on the profile.
9Secondary category slots on every profile. Most contractors leave most of them empty.
0Ad dollars category work requires. This is unclaimed visibility, not a media buy.

The Category Problem Most Contractors Never Find

When you set up your profile, you picked a primary category and moved on. That one choice now decides which searches you appear in and which ones you are invisible for. Too broad, and Contractor loses to the shop that chose HVAC Contractor or Plumber. Too narrow, and the services you actually run never surface at all.

Meanwhile the competitors sitting above you in the Map Pack almost certainly carry a fuller category set than you do, Google keeps adding more specific options your profile has never been checked against, and any irrelevant categories bolted on over the years are diluting the authority of the ones that matter.

Categories are the foundation everything else stands on.

Reviews, photos, and posts all rank you within the searches your categories qualify you for. Get the categories wrong and the strongest profile in town still cannot lift you into searches Google never considers you for.

What Category Optimization Includes

We research, select, and configure the exact categories that widen your Map Pack visibility, and we leave out the irrelevant ones that would dilute it.

Primary Category Research

We identify the single most specific, highest-traffic category for your core service. It is the most influential setting on the profile, and it is the one most contractors have set too broad.

Competitor Category Analysis

We reverse-engineer the category sets of the profiles ranking above you. If a weaker competitor outranks you, their category structure is often part of why, and we build yours stronger.

Secondary Category Stack

Up to nine secondary categories covering your full service offering, each one backed by search demand and relevance rather than a guess. The goal is never to fill all ten slots. It is to hold the right ones.

Ongoing Category Monitoring

Google adds and refines categories regularly. On our GBP management plan we watch those releases and update your set when a more specific or higher-demand option opens for your trade.

Sequenced So Your Rankings Never Take the Hit

Audit

We map your current categories against every service you actually run, then pull the category sets of the profiles outranking you for comparison.

Select

We confirm or correct the primary and build the secondary stack from search demand, cutting anything irrelevant that would dilute the profile.

Implement and Watch

Secondary changes go first. The primary changes only when the data supports it, because it can shake rankings while Google recalibrates, and we watch positions closely after every update.

Sequenced correctly, a category fix expands your reach without risking the rankings you already hold.

Find the Searches You Are Invisible For

Category work is one of the fastest, lowest-cost fixes on your entire profile. We will show you what your current set is costing you. It costs nothing and carries no commitment.

It is built by an operator rather than an agency.

Questions

What owners ask about this.

How do I know if my primary category is wrong?

Two common tells. You show up for generic searches but not service-specific ones, which points to a category set too broad. Or competitors outrank you despite weaker reviews and fewer photos, where category mismatch is a frequent culprit. A free audit shows you exactly which it is.

Can adding too many categories hurt my rankings?

Yes. Irrelevant categories confuse Google about what your business is and dilute the profile’s authority for the searches that matter. We only add categories tied to services you actually run, with real search demand behind them.

Will changing my categories affect my current rankings?

Changing the primary can move rankings temporarily while Google recalibrates the profile. That is why we sequence the work: secondary categories first, the primary only when the data clearly supports it, with rankings watched closely after every change.

What is the difference between categories and services on my profile?

Categories tell Google what kind of business you are and drive which searches you rank in. The Services section tells homeowners what specific work you do and mostly drives conversion. Both matter, and our GBP management covers both, but categories decide which Map Pack you are even eligible for.

How often should categories be reviewed?

Quarterly at minimum, because Google updates its category database often and more specific contractor options appear regularly. Add a new service line and the review happens right away. On the management plan, this monitoring runs as standard.

See what the audit finds.

Capstone is run by an operator with more than ten years in marketing, seven of them running it inside an eight-figure Northwest Ohio home services company, so the audit comes from someone who has had to make these calls with real money on the line. It costs nothing and it does not require a meeting.
